Q: Describe your role within the firm. A: I work on a team that processes operational transactions for our Canadian branches such as account transfers from other institutions and the issuance of cheques to clients. Q: Describe how your division contributes to the firm's success. A: Since our branches are one-Financial Advisor/Branch Office Administrator offices, they need to have head office contacts that they can rely on to get the job done when they need assistance or are providing a service to their clients. Operations serves as the hub for all types of transactions; whether it be a trade, issuing a cheque, setting up a systematic investment plan, or transferring an account, we are the ones who can make it happen. The level of service that our branches provide to their clients is directly related to the level of service that head office provides to the branches. Q: What year did you start at Edward Jones? What year did you start in your current position? A: I started in 1997 in Branch Services and moved to Operations in 2000. Q: What did you do prior to joining Edward Jones? A: Just before Edward Jones I was at home raising my three children, but prior to that I worked at the Toronto Dominion Bank. Q: Are there any memorable experiences you’d like to share that encapsulate or typify what it’s like to work for Edward Jones? A: I can remember when Branch Service associates all pitched in to help new Financial Advisors that were having trouble keeping up with opening up so many new accounts. I enjoyed the cooperative spirit and how grateful the Financial Advisors were to have the help. Q: Describe the culture at Edward Jones and how it’s different from your previous job. What is unique? A: Responsibility-based management allows you to get your job done without someone “micro-managing” what you do. You have a responsibility statement to fulfill and are given the tools and guidelines to make it happen. The firm has confidence in you that you are going to do the right thing for the client. Q: One area Edward Jones prides itself is enabling associates to maintain a strong work-life balance. How does this approach impact you? A: I am lucky that this has not impacted me, but I have seen instances of other associates being granted leaves and flexible hours to get them through times of personal troubles. Q: What does the firm being a partnership mean to you? A: It means thinking like an owner. Associates seem to care more for the well-being and future of the firm. Q: Do you think Edward Jones has taken good care of you in terms of overall compensation package, including medical benefits, vacation time, retirement planning and salary? A: Edward Jones encourages every one of us to save for our retirement and matches our RRSP contributions up to a limit of $700. I am happy to report that I have seen my savings grow since joining Edward Jones. Q: What qualities do you think a person needs to have to succeed in the home office environment? A: It takes a sense of cooperation to get the job done; empathy for our branch offices and clients; a spirit of fun! Q: There are very few offices at Edward Jones, with nearly all the firm's leaders located in cubicles. What does this structure mean to you? A: At Edward Jones every associate is encouraged to speak up and contribute any thoughts or ideas to their leaders. The firm takes to heart ideas that are presented by the associates who actually do the work and stress the importance of a responsibility based management. So they want everyone to feel welcome to approach them at any time. Q: How has the firm supported your professional growth via training opportunities? A: Self development is a big part of Edward Jones. We are encouraged to choose work-related courses and make them part of our objectives.
