Maureen Parkin
Receptionist
Canary Wharf

“The culture here is certainly different than the last company that I worked for. I would say probably that senior management is much more approachable and certainly more visible to associates.”

Q: Describe your role within the firm.
A: As Receptionist, I am the first point of contact for all visitors, associates and Financial Advisers alike, very much a customer service role and therefore need to know what is going on in the home office. I have my 'finger on the pulse' at all times. A very demanding role, but also very rewarding.

Q: Describe how your division contributes to the firm's success.
A: As first point of contact, my role is extremely important as first impressions always count and can make a difference. I know this, and all associates know this.

Q: What year did you start at Edward Jones?
A: I started at Edward Jones in December 2002.

Q: What did you do prior to joining Edward Jones?
A: Prior to Edward Jones I was a Recruitment Consultant, Pan-European Training Coordinator and Personal Assistant.

Q: Describe the culture at Edward Jones and how it’s different from your previous job. What is unique?
A: The culture here is certainly different than the last company that I worked for. I would say probably that senior management is much more approachable and certainly more visible to associates. In fact, I would say the uniqueness is the visibility of senior management.

Q: One area Edward Jones prides itself is enabling associates to maintain a strong work-life balance. How does this approach impact you?
A: This does not really impact upon me at all. I made the decision to come here as a Receptionist as part of my retirement plan. That being that I only have to work my normal full-time hours and not work over my allotted time. However, like everyone else, sometimes I do have to work more than my normal hours. It doesn't happen too often. But I am happy to do so if necessary.

Q: What does the firm being a partnership mean to you?
A: To me it means as though I 'own' the company rather than just being an 'employee'.

Q: Before you came to Edward Jones, what did the name mean to you? And after you came on board?
A: Prior to coming here the name meant nothing to me; however, now that I work for Edward Jones the 'name' of Edward Jones now means that as this is a regulated firm, I have great trust in them.

Q: Articulate the spirit of volunteerism that exists at Jones. How have you been involved and what was that experience like?
A: I am the Chair of the Associates Activities Committee and have been for the last 4 years. This role is voluntary, I'm still doing it, and so it must be good! I work with associates from different divisions and we all work together as one team on various initiatives throughout the year.

Q: Do you feel you are rewarded for taking initiative and “going the extra mile” at Edward Jones?
A: All the senior management 'reward' me in the sense of thanking me constantly for going more than the extra mile. And at bonus time I am always rewarded.

Q: How do you see your future at Edward Jones unfolding?
A: I will continue in this role until I retire. This role is extremely busy and ever changing every day, so I am never, ever bored.

Q: As you go through your daily activities, how do you know you’ve achieved success at Edward Jones?
A: I have very strong work ethic. I constantly review 'mentally' how I am doing all day. I am my biggest critic.
