Q: Describe your role within the firm. A: I’m responsible for leading the integration and coordination of the firm's internal communications efforts. Q: Describe how your division contributes to the firm's success. A: Associate Communications contributes to the firm's success by helping to ensure that associates are well-informed about key firm initiatives and objectives and that they understand the vision for the firm and the steps we’re taking to get there. Q: What year did you start at Edward Jones? What year did you start in your current position? A: I started at Edward Jones in 1986 as a college intern in the Communications/Advertising department. Upon graduating in 1987, I was offered a full-time position. Although I've been in Communications for 20 years, my role has evolved dramatically over the years, from writer, to publications coordinator, to direct marketing, to my current responsibility for Associate Communications, a role I've had for the past four years. Q: Are there any memorable experiences you’d like to share that encapsulate or typify what it’s like to work for Edward Jones? A: In the summer of 1995, the firm sponsored a Habitat for Humanity blitz build in Los Angeles. We sent Financial Advisors, Branch Office Administrators (BOAs) and home-office associates to the South Central LA, one of the toughest neighborhoods in the country, to build one of 16 houses being constructed. The home we were building was right next door to the home being constructed by former President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalyn Carter. They were on-site every day working as hard as everyone else. In fact, we hosted a client broadcast from the construction site, including an interview with Mr. Carter. Being in LA, there were lots of celebrities on site, too, which was exciting. However, the most meaningful part of the event was the camaraderie and teamwork of the Edward Jones group. Getting Financial Advisors, BOAs and home-office associates from all over the country together to work on such a worthwhile project was so moving. I was on site to coordinate public relations and was scheduled to leave after a few days. I was so moved by the entire event that I asked if it would be possible to stay on after my PR responsibilities were fulfilled to simply be part of the team, and my request was granted. It gives me chills just to remember how impressed I was that the firm would allow me to relinquish my work-day responsibilities to help this very worthy cause. Q: Describe the culture at Edward Jones. What is unique? A: The culture of Edward Jones is characterized, first and foremost, by respect for the individual. The firm was founded by Mr. Edward Jones Sr. on the premise of respect and fairness, and those characteristics remain strong today. People treat others the way they would want to be treated if their roles were reversed, and that makes it great to get up and come into the office every day. Q: One area Edward Jones prides itself is enabling our associates to maintain a strong work-life balance. How does this approach impact you? A: This has had a huge impact on me. When my son was born nearly 11 years ago, I realized that I wanted to continue working at Edward Jones but not full time. I either wanted to be a stay-at-home mom or work part time. Fortunately, the firm valued my contribution enough to allow me to work three days a week and spend the other two taking care of my family. I had a daughter two and a half years later and continued working part time. When my youngest was nearing the end of pre-school, I was offered an opportunity to take on responsibility leading the Direct Marketing area, in addition to my responsibilities for Associate Communications. There was no pressure to come back full time to do this. I was explicitly told I could continue my part time schedule. I had already been thinking about what I would do when my daughter started kindergarten, so the timing was right to consider re-entering the workforce full time. However, I really valued my time at home. So, I discussed my situation with my leader, proposing that I return to work full time but work in the office three days a week and at home two days a week. When I presented the idea to him he was fully supportive. I have been full time for about three years, continuing to work at home two days a week, even with additional leadership opportunities. It's great all around! Q: Do you feel there are opportunities for advancement and greater income potential at Edward Jones? A: I have been at the firm 20 years. Although I have been in the same area for that time, I have had unlimited opportunities for increased responsibility and leadership. At Edward Jones, you're recognized for your contribution, not necessarily your title, and I've always believed that I've been given ample opportunity to increase my contribution and been rewarded appropriately.
