Ease Your Stress with These 4 Healthy Methods

In light of National Stress Awareness Month, it’s important to acknowledge that stress is likely to come and go throughout our lives. Between our work and personal lives, we’ve all experienced it at some point. Though small bursts of stress can be motivators, too much can become detrimental. Try these healthy methods next time you’re looking for some relief.

  1. Find the root - If you’re feeling overwhelmed, one of the first things to do is identify the stressor. Start jotting down a few notes every time you’re feeling stressed and find the pattern. Be sure not to overlook the subtler things, such as negative thoughts, procrastination or worrying.

  2. Exercise - It’s a given that exercise is good for your body but it’s great for your mental health, too. Whether you’re hiking, playing a game of tennis or lifting weights at the gym, you’re increasing the production of endorphins—your body’s natural chemicals that cause you to feel happy—in your body, leaving you feeling at ease and refocused.

  3. Get more sleep - The chemicals in your brain that are connected to deep sleep are the same chemicals that tell your body to stop producing stress hormones. If you’re not getting adequate sleep, your body continues producing stress hormones, causing you to wake up feeling exhausted instead of refreshed. By getting at least one extra hour of sleep every night, you’ll do yourself a huge favor.

  4. Do something you enjoy - By taking some time to do something you enjoy, you give yourself the opportunity to recharge. Whether you read a book, go golfing or meet up with a friend, do something for yourself every now and then. You’ll leave with a new perspective and a positive mindset.
